£9,000 boost for Bridgwater Cricket Club. (February 01, 2007)
BRIDGWATER Cricket Club has become one of the first to benefit from the government's £9.4m Community Club Development Programme through the English Cricket Board.
The programme is a funding package aimed at upgrading club facilities and Bridgwater received £9,033, which has enabled them to provide a new synthetic pitch on the square at The Parks.
Bridgwater was identified by the ECB as a club which deserved support because of the strength of its junior cricket development programme.
Club committee member Chris Cowley commented: "The pitch gives additional playing and practice opportunities, especially for the junior cricketers. We have more than 100 junior members and the synthetic pitch provides the good safe playing surface, which is so important for the development of young cricketers."
He added: "We could not have afforded this new facility from our own resources. We have now made a further application to the ECB to upgrade our cricket square and we hope this will be the next phase in our development programme." Bridgwater CC are running junior training sessions at Haygrove sports hall for six weeks starting on Saturday, February 17. Under-15 sessions will be from 10.15am to 11.30, and U-13S from 11.45am to 1pm to 13.00. The under-11s start on Sunday, February 18, also for six weeks and there are two sessions: 2.15pm to 3.30 and 3.45pm to 5. Contact Chris Cowley on (01278) 439141 for further information. All the sessions will be run by qualified ECB coaches and will cost £2 per session. The club are looking to introduce more girls to cricket. Anyone in school years 5, 6, 7 and 8 who is interested should ask their parents or guardians to ring Chris Cowley on the above number.
