£100,000 TO UPGRADE STUNNING CRICKET CLUB! (October 08, 2006) KESWICK Cricket Club has announced £100,000 development plans to allow them to meet challenging needs in the future.
The first of the two stages of the development will be the provision of an electronic scoreboard and secure storage area, which is likely to cost £35,000.
The club’s ambitious plans will be outlined at a meeting of the Keswick Charitable Trusts on Thursday night.
The trustees are responsible for managing the town’s parks, including Lower Fitz Park, voted Wisden’s Loveliest Ground in the UK in 2001, the inaugural year of the awards.
At that time over £200,000 was raised to replace the old cricket pavilion which was long past its ‘sell-by’ date.
And a club spokesman said that development had proved to be the catalyst in changing the fortunes of the club and increasing membership.
Keswick Cricket Club was formed in the 1870s. It now has eight qualified coaches, works with local schools, has improved the standard of the playing area and was recently recognised by the English Cricket Board as a ‘Focus Club’ – one of around a dozen in the county and fewer than 300 nationwide.
Thursday’s meeting received information from the club about its plans for the future.
The club says the proposals are “not only exciting for the club, but also for the town and surrounding district as hopefully we will enhance the reputation of the area for the provision of first class facilities for the local community as well as the many visitors who join us each year”.
Keswick Cricket Club has gone a long way since 1993 when it was at a low ebb struggling to even turn out two teams.
It now has a strong junior section and recently merged the playing sides of Keswick and Threlkeld cricket clubs to provide four senior sides.Click here to return to the News page
